LiT MIX 033 :: Mr. Wu

LIT MIX 033 - MR. WU (with TATS) white bckgrnd.png

Hot on the heels of the scorpio full moon, we are mesmerized by LiT MiX 032 from Portland’s total-eclipse-of-the-heartthrob DJ Mr. Wu. Dripping with swag and sensuality, this set is a moody masterpiece that melts through the 100-120bpm range. Mixing fresh rnb, rap, 808 bass, amapiano and more for an hour of music ideal for both cosy autumn easy listening, and getting the party heated.

A legendary west coast selector also known as the designer behind clothing brand Rythmatix, Mr. Wu has been a fave DJ of the crew for almost a decade. Calling his clothing ‘a study in visual rhythms’, his DJ mixes could be called ‘a dance through sonic imagery’. The storytelling is key— from rappers with evocative lyrics in the tracks, to the intersecting narratives connecting Mr. Wu’s diverse yet distilled multi-genre sonic sensibilities. We love this about his sets! The songs feel like scenes in a movie when they’re mixed this good.

:: INTERVIEW ::

🔥 Light Twerkerz: When and how did you meet Light Twerkerz?

📣 MR. WU: Bass Coast!

🔥 Light Twerkerz: How would you describe your connection with the group?

📣 MR. WU: Well I would say being enamored from the sidelines so I am stoked to be more connected now.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: How would you describe Light Twerkerz to your parents?

📣 MR. WU: Haha that would be comical, they super straightedge. A collective of dancers that shake and free their butts so their minds will follow.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: If you were sharing this DJ mix to someone you were crushing on, how would you describe it to them?

📣 MR. WU: I'd be like "here's a seamless mix that blends party tunes and love songs".

🔥 Light Twerkerz: How did you first discover twerking?

📣 MR. WU: I think Bass Coast, and it was Blondtron that made it very apparent.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Have you ever had a “twerkthrough” experience? (booty movement-related mind-body epiphany) If yes, please describe your first and/or most recent such realization:

📣 MR. WU: I haven't butt I will be working towards that.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What is the most butt-tastic dancefloor activity you’ve ever witnessed while DJing?

📣 MR. WU: Honestly what comes to mind is the time I DJ'd a dance battle; there was a dancer that does vogue / waacking and they were on the ground shaking their butt while making eye contact with the dancer they were battling. There was over 100 people watching and losing it making noise.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What was your ASSpiration for this mix?

📣 MR. WU: Booty shakin' dance floor tunes blended and bridged with some more vibey stuff. Most of the mixes I put out tend to be on the chill side so this was an invitation to get after it a bit more.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What kind of butt do you have?

📣 MR. WU: Small and boney and kinda round. Been told it's cute tho haha.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Do you have a favorite booty type? Kindly explain...

📣 MR. WU: A booty that is round and kinda big and bounces.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What does a booty/body positive dance floor mean to you as a DJ?

📣 MR. WU: Everyone lost in the music and simultaneously being aware of themselves.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What's your favorite booty music to DJ?

📣 MR. WU: Club hip hop with deep bass lines. Also dancehall.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What inspires you to move your butt as a dancer?

📣 MR. WU: Lately it's soulful house music. But I think it goes beyond the music - dancing in an environment where everyone is grooving and feels safe.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What is your personal cultural background? Any specific cultural traditions related to booty-shaking that have influenced you?

📣 MR. WU: My personal cultural background growing up with a Chinese father was math and business, so no. I grew up listened to rap music tho and then started going to raves in the early 2000's. Dancing did not come naturally to me although I really enjoyed getting wasted and rocking out. I got into street dance (popping and strutting) about 7 years ago and feel so much more connected to dance now. Learning about the culture and traditions within those styles can really help connect to the music and movements. And, now I don't need to get wasted to dance.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Are there any affiliations (labels, crews, blogs, etc…) that we should list/link you with when promoting this mix?

📣 MR. WU: I would say everything is shouted out properly in the track listing. Shouts to all the artists <3 🍑
