LiT MIX 031 :: Destrata

Destrata lit mix cover bw.jpg

Pt. 2 of this month’s LiT MiX double feature on Vancouver’s Audio Social crew features emerging producer/DJ/promoter Destrata. A brewer by day, Destrata is sure to make the dancefloor bubble by night!

Chugging through bouncy syncopated mutations of leftfield UK Bass music and Afro-Latin infused techno, this genre-blurring set includes his own original tracks amidst aesthetically adjacent established and emerging producers.

Having released his debut E.P. on Denmark’s Indexlife in 2021, and a track on mentor Martyn’s 3024 label, Destrata’s first release of 2022 is with partner Garneau as the dynamic electro breaks duo Energy Boyz, whose E.P. “Energize” is out this week on Finland’s Tob Billin’ Label. Stay tuned to Audio Social for events and mix series curated by Destrata alongside Lil Cis, Handsome Tiger, and Thuja.

:: INTERVIEW ::

🔥 Light Twerkerz: When and how did you meet Light Twerkerz?

📣 DESTRATA: The first time I met the whole crew was at a house party pre-pandemic I believe. (I miss house parties!)

🔥 Light Twerkerz: How would you describe your connection with the group?

📣 DESTRATA: I know Rich Nines the best as he has done some photography for me, but I've definitely seen the crew around at many a rave shaking their stuff.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: How would you describe Light Twerkerz to your parents?

📣 DESTRATA: Butt Liberators.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: If you were sharing this DJ mix to someone you were crushing on, how would you describe it to them?

📣 DESTRATA: A journey through tempos and genres, designed to make you feel like you are at an intimate B.C. bush rave with your besties.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: How did you first discover twerking?

📣 DESTRATA: Definitely the twerkshop at Basscoast! An amazing thing to stumble across in the morning after a long night or raving haha.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Have you ever had a “twerkthrough” experience?

📣 DESTRATA: I don't know if I would say it is specifically booty related but I was a pretty awkward tall and lanky teenager. I felt very self conscious dancing when I was younger and didn't really enjoy it, but through the local rave community I saw every kind of person dancing and just being in the moment which allowed me to feel comfortable with myself and just let loose!

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What was your ASSpiration for this mix?

📣 DESTRATA: With most of my mixes these days I like to be less constrained by genre and try instead to match energies and vibes. I like to start with lower bpms and work my way up, all while keeping the energy high! I also wanted to put in some personal productions and finish it off with a track from my mentor Martyn, who has been an amazing teacher over the last 2 years!

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What kind of butt do you have?

📣 DESTRATA: Oh man, not much of one but that's ok haha!

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Do you have any body image related anecdotes to share regarding your personal relationship to your butt or that of someone you know?

📣 DESTRATA: One time someone I was making out with touched my butt and called it disappointing, but now I'm on an ass themed mix series so jokes on them lol! :)

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Do you have a favorite booty type? Kindly explain...

📣 DESTRATA: I haven't met a butt I didn't like yet. Who knows maybe it will happen one day, but probably not.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What does a booty/body positive dance floor mean to you as a DJ?

📣 DESTRATA: From my personal experience what the dj is playing is actually less important than the physical space of the event. I notice that when you go out to shows at more mainstream venues the vibe is a lot more reserved. It's only when you have underground spaces that foster real communities that people can really feel comfortable to be themselves. Those are alway the best parties when the crowd feels totally uninhibited. So focusing on independent art spaces is really important in my opinion!

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What's your favourite booty music to DJ?

📣 DESTRATA: I'm loving the new wave of bass/latin hybrid stuff that's coming out of Miami right now. The energy is just undeniable and seems to get everybody moving every time.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What inspires your to move your butt as a dancer?

📣 DESTRATA: Good swinging percussion. No matter what the genre, if the song has good drums, I'm there.

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Any memorable times as a DJ you had to adapt your selections to a particular audience while playing “booty music”?

📣 DESTRATA: Well I always see myself as a DJ in two scenes, the bass scene and the techno scene. Usually if I'm playing a bass set I keep things a bit more booty focused and upbeat. But I do like to sneak bass music into my techno sets. My ultimate goal is to trick my techno friends into listening to bass music, and trick my bass friends into listening to Techno ;).
