🔥 Light Twerkerz: When and how did you meet Light Twerkerz?

📣 NGAIO: Through the wonderful internet! It's been so wonderful to be able to connect with a crew overseas and though this pandemic has been really hard it has brought with it new connections that perhaps wouldn't have flourished so beautifully otherwise. 

 

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: How would you describe your connection with the group?
📣 NGAIO: Rich Nines has guested on my radio show on SWU FM here in Bristol and we've been able to connect crews which has been amazing - Booty Bass started in my head in 2017 and to see the amazing roster of DJs we have now and how far we can reach is a dream come true.

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: How would you describe Light Twerkerz to your parents?

📣 NGAIO: Likeminded lovers of Booty, Respect, Acceptance, Intersectionality and Empowerment to Female/Non Binary Folks inna di dance!

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: If you were sharing this DJ mix to someone you were crushing on, how would you describe Light Twerkerz to them?

📣 NGAIO: I'd say limber up baby, I want to hear how this affects every part of your mind body and soul. Rooted in twerking, sensuality, memory and possibility.

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: How did you first discover twerking?

📣 NGAIO: Watching Aunties in the dance moving their back with ease- curving up the spine, little purposeful movements. So subtle and sensual, you knew it was for their enjoyment - all of them cheering each other on. I saw it rooted in joy and excitement - though also realizing it could be the beginning of something that happened behind closed doors ;)

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Have you ever had a “twerkthrough” experience? (booty movement-related mind-body epiphany)

📣 NGAIO: Hearing dubstep for the first time when I first started raving in Bristol. Dubstep doesn't come to everyone's mind when we talk twerking but the way the bass moved through my body, I felt every muscle relax and started moving. My friend turned to me and said, 'How are you grinding to this music right now?' I didn't have an answer for her, it just felt right.

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What is the most butt-tastic dancefloor activity you’ve ever witnessed while DJing?

📣 NGAIO: The Plough in Bristol which is the original home of Booty Bass, when I first played Gasolina and No Problem the whole place erupted, it was insane. Sweat pouring from everyone's faces, the whole lot of us were drenched in sweat by the time we left.

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What was your ASSpiration for this mix?

📣 NGAIO: This mix is a reflection of the many different genres I love. I wanted to take the listener of a bit of a journey of my musical heritage and loves which have come from all around the world so you'll hear some R&B vibes, Dancehall which I fell in love with in Jamaica in my teens, some Latin vibes from my travels in South America, some UK funky and Drum & Bass from the UK, a lot of fusion music and some Afrobeats and Soca to end with - which got me started on my DJing journey 5 years ago.

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What kind of butt do you have?
📣 NGAIO: That's a good question and I have no idea! A sizeable one.

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What is your personal cultural background? Any specific cultural traditions related to booty-shaking that have influenced you?

📣 NGAIO: I'm half Nigerian half English though my step dad would say also half Jamaican (I know that's more than one whole, but we don't mention that!) I mean Jamaica is the twerking mecca - you can't not shake your booty to bashment. Carnival culture having a lickle grind with someone in a crowd and then going on your way - no pressure, no rudeness, just a nice dance which involved some grinding, was a great lesson for me. It really showed me that, a) people (men) can read body language if they want to and b) it is ok to wine on someone, or just yourself, and it not have to be an invitation for sex.

 

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Do you have a favourite booty type? Kindly explain...

📣 NGAIO: A pert handful is my fave. Something to hold onto.

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What does a booty/body positive dance floor mean to you as a DJ?

📣 NGAIO: One where everyone can bring their full selves, sexy in their own skin and feel safe to see every stranger as a new friend.

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What's your favorite booty music to DJ?

📣 NGAIO: Oooooh that's a hard one!!! Probably dancehall and afrobeats - I can't help but dance when I'm djing but those genres are the ones most likely distract me from choosing the next track cause I'm too busy winin behind the decks!

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What inspires your to move your butt as a dancer?

📣 NGAIO: Other people and watching their joy!

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Any memorable times as a DJ you had to adapt your selections to a particular audience while playing “booty music”?

📣 NGAIO: I had one experience where I was playing my booty music for Pride and this older guy came over and said 'what you're doing no-one's enjoying. Pick something else or we're going to leave' I enjoyed watching him walk out.

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Are there any affiliations (labels, crews, blogs, etc…) that we should list/link you with when promoting this mix?
